Barnes, KS Campout – June 11-15, 2008
Nine (9) Heartland Winnie’s couples traveled to Barnes, KS, most arriving Wednesday evening.  We ate dinner at the American Legion in Linn, KS.  Then, it was back to the Barnes Park for ice cream served by co-hosts Don and Anita Singular.  Our ice cream treat was cut short by the sound of tornado sirens as we took shelter in the Barnes school. We appreciated the weather spotter who visited our camp alerting us of the approaching severe weather and unlocking the school to provide us with shelter.

Thursday morning, with the severe weather behind us, we were off to Washington, KS to visit the pie capital of Kansas, Marcon Pie Factory, where we were given delicious samples. Many purchased pies to take home. We then visited KSDA (Kansas Specialty Dog Services) an organization dedicated to the training and placement of canine assistance to individuals with disabilities.  We observed the dogs specialized skills learned to assist their owners. Next, we took a trip down memory lane visiting the Herr’s Machine Shop (established in 1969) touring the company shop and seeing all the vintage cars, trucks, tractors and machinery. Many of the vehicles and equipment were hand built by Lawrence Herrs, seemingly a mechanical genius, building his first car at the age of 8 years.  We returned to camp; and after dinner and more ice cream, the group played Card Bingo.

Friday morning our hosts served biscuits and gravy for breakfast, and we were off to visit Ohlde Dairy Farm.  We learned about the family farm’s operations, watched the cows being milked and transferred to feeding and bedding pens, and purchased some great cheeses.  We ate lunch in Barnes, and then returned to camp for our chapter meeting.  In the evening we toured an original Pony Express station outside of Hanover, KS.  We learned about the history and activities of the Pony Express and Oregon Trail at the site.  We ate a delicious dinner in Hanover and returned back to camp to play the remaining evening away with bean bag baseball.  The Yankees won.

Saturday morning was spent in Barnes touring the shops and watching for vintage automobiles passing through on a tour.  Orpha and Loy Carlson and Dick Garcia were treated to a ride in a 1918 Buick open wheel racer by owner, Lawrence Herrs.  The car was originally built for entry in the 1918 Indianapolis 500 race that was cancelled because of World War I.

It was then back to the park for lunch on our own, visiting and a game of Washers by the men. Lorraine Garcia was the winner of a jar of candy for guessing how many pieces of candy were in the jar.  Our evening was filled with a great pot luck dinner followed by another round of bean bag baseball.  The Yankees lost to the Royals.

Sunday morning, the group was treated to a large continental breakfast before Anita Singular led devotional services with music.  We all headed home mid-morning under threats of another round of severe weather.  What a fun campout!

Attendees:  Singulars, Carlsons, Garcias, Veltmans, Shermans, Greens, Marxs, Busters
and Zabokrtskys.

A special thanks to our hosts, Don & Anita Singular and Orpha and Loy Carlson, for
hosting the campout and planning these great tours and activities for us.
