September 12 - 14

Salina, KS Campout – September 12 – 14, 2008
Twelve Heartland member’s rigs/cars traveled to the Sun Downers RV Park at Salina, KS. Thursday, early-birds played cards in the afternoon and went into Salina for a Mexican dinner. Friday morning we headed into Ellsworth to tour the underground tunnels originally built for protection from weather and Indians. Our guide provided a brief history of Ellsworth and the tunnel system and reviewed his restoration activities of the tunnels and other historical places in town.  We ate lunch at the deli on above the tunnel which was the old Masonic Lodge. In the evening, we gathered in the campground shelter where our hosts served baked potatoes with all the toppings and members provided salads and desserts. We were treated to prize bags containing merchandise and gift certificates to several Salina businesses.  Our hosts arranged for entertainment provided by the accomplished folk and country duo Mike Mattson and Teresa Weaver.  We enjoyed the music and Mike’s humor.  On Saturday following breakfast provided by the hosts, the September chapter meeting was conducted.  The meeting included installation of new officers.  Afterwards, members shopped in downtown Salina, attended the Wheatland Cluster Dog Show or enjoyed visiting at camp. In the evening we toured the beautifully restored Stiefel Theater in the downtown Lee District.  Our guide provided a detailed description of the theatre’s origin and history, its restoration, and current shows and activities. The presentation was interesting and the building was beautiful. After the tour, we walked across the street for a delicious dinner at Martinelli’s Italian restaurant. Following dinner, Phyll Kilma, Executive Director, Salina Downtown, Inc., told us about the revitalization of the city’s downtown Lee District.  Sunday morning, our fun campout ended with a finger food breakfast followed by church services led by Randall Weller, accompanied by Phyllis Weller.
