Minooka Park

The weather was cooler and wetter then one would expect for early September, but for those who came to the Wilson campout, a wonderful time was had! People started arriving Thursday afternoon and when the bugs became too much, we all escaped into the Haerich's camper for an evening of lively and enjoyable conversation.

Nothing was planned for the morning and early afternoon of Friday, so naturally that means we ran our tails off! We took a road trip to Lucas to tour "When Pigs Fly" (an interesting art studio). The town of Lucas is raising money for a public restroom and they have an art display of toilet seats that will be auctioned off to help raise money. Lunch was at Randall's Nephew's restaurant, and nobody left hungry. Friday afternoon was spent going through a tour of KOOD public television in Bunker Hill, followed by supper at the Bunker Hill Cafe. Again, everyone left satisfied.

Saturday had us on the go again as we took a tour of the historic Midland Hotel in Wilson.

That was followed by lunch at "Made From Scratch" also in Wilson. While picking up provisions for our supper (no really we didn't just eat all weekend - well, ok, maybe we did) at the Wilson groceries store we ran into a man who gave us an impromptu tour of a home in Wilson that he is planning on restoring with the help of local Vo-Ag classes from the area schools. He was the winning bid from 11 entries to restore this historic landmark. His plan is to teach the students how to restore and renovate old buildings as an alternative to the "bulldoze and construct new" method of home building that is happening in the small towns throughout the US. We finished our excursion by shopping at the Kansas store at the Wilson exit. We then went back to the lake to get ready for supper. The club purchased the meat for the dinner and club members brought pot luck side dishes. the camp hosts (Martins & Haerich's) made apple and cherry cobbler in Dutch ovens as desert. While desert was being cooked, we had our club meeting. The evening finished with us playing Bingo. Thanks go to Sandra V for calling the Bingo as well as providing the prizes.

Sunday morning, well, we ate potluck again and had a service provided by Randall. Some of us had to leave then, but most of the club stayed camping at the lake as the next campout is in the Salina area
