JANUARY PRAIRIE WINNIES WINTER GATHERING

All the chapters of the Prairie Winnies club were invited to the Winter Gathering, which was held this year in Marquette Ks.  The hosts were Terry and Ann Headrick, and what a gathering it was.  People braved an ice storm to get together and reaffirm that while it was freezing cold outside on this day, it is only a few short months until we can start the camping season in earnest.

Twelve couples representing the High Plains Roamers, Heartland Winnies, and the KA MO Headwaters met at the Valley Café where we enjoyed an excellent meal of chicken-fried steak, home-made whipped potatoes and corn served by the Steve and Mary Piper.  Steve not only runs the Café, but he is also the out-going mayor of the fine town of Marquette.

After lunch we took a tour of the Hans Hanson Lindfors Home.  This house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the US Department of the Interior on February 19, 1982.  The home, a 16 room Victorian Mansion was caringly restored by Mr. Allan Lindfors, who currently lives there with his wife, JoAn Hamilton-Lindfors.

The meeting ended with a tour of the Ks. Motorcycle Museum, owned by “Stan the Man” Engdahl, and his wife LaVona. Stan is a five time National Scrambles Racing Champion.  The museum sports vintage, antique, and “one of a kind” motorcycles along with 600 trophies that Stan has won over his great career.  Stan is also a sponsor of the “Thunder on the Smoky” motorcycle rally, which will be held this year on May 19, 2007.  For a virtual tour of this great motorcycle museum, history of “Stan the Man”, or for more information regarding the “Thunder on the Smoky” rally, you can visit their web site at www.ksmm.us.
